Responder stories
On September 1, 2024, Dave Baptie, a dedicated first responder for LIVES, took on the ultimate challenge. He climbed Africa’s highest peak, Mount Kilimanjaro. Driven by his passion for helping others, Dave undertook this remarkable, self-financed journey to raise funds for both LIVES and Prostate Cancer UK, combining his efforts to support two causes close to his heart.
As a Community First Responder, Dave is no stranger to tough situations. He regularly assists with medical emergencies, delivering life-saving care within his local community. This time, however, his mission took him beyond Lincolnshire – on a journey to conquer the 5,895-meter mountain!
Climbing Kilimanjaro is no small feat. The trek demands incredible physical and mental endurance, with challengers battling extreme altitudes and varying climates. For Dave, this was more than a test of strength—it was a way to raise crucial funds for both LIVES and Prostate Cancer UK, highlighting his deep commitment to saving lives and raising awareness for men’s health.
Dave’s journey took on an even deeper meaning in the summer of 2023 when he learned that his father had been rushed into hospital for tests. In early August, they received news—it was prostate cancer. This personal experience made Dave even more determined to raise awareness and support Prostate Cancer UK. With 1 in 8 men facing prostate cancer throughout their life early detection is crucial.
The trek saw Dave ascend through Kilimanjaro’s unique landscapes, from rainforests to barren alpine deserts, all leading to the famous Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. His journey was not just a triumph of personal achievement but a significant contribution to two important causes.
By climbing Kilimanjaro, Dave not only pushed himself to new limits but also made a lasting impact by helping both LIVES and Prostate Cancer UK continue their vital work. His efforts are a testament to the power of dedication and the far-reaching effects of one individual’s commitment to making a difference.
Dave’s fundraising, conducted through a Just Giving, aims to split donations between LIVES and Prostate Cancer UK. His final total is the incredible sum of £1300 – meaning both LIVES and Prostate Cancer UK will each benefit from a £650 donation! Join Dave in celebrating his incredible journey and the impact he’s made for the local community in Lincoln through this adventure!
